Teague Picks Up Third Straight Win
Rough waters no match for AMSOIL boat

Bob TeagueBob Teague has become unstoppable the past three races.  Teague and driver Paul Whittier brought the AMSOIL Skater Cat Lite boat to its third straight win last weekend in Orange Beach, Calif.

Teague took a pair of wins over the weekend at the Thunder on the Gulf, an Off Shore Super Series (OSS) sanctioned event.  It marked the third straight win for the AMSOIL boat and second straight over the strong Motley Crew boat.  The Motley Crew led the first five laps on Sunday before giving way to AMSOIL on the last lap.  AMSOIL had been pushed wide off the start after a number of boats got tangled up.  The AMSOIL boat pushed its twin-525 horsepower engines through the rough water for win in the Cat Lites class.

"We've never raced this boat in water this rough, and we ran it hard," AMSOIL throttleman Bob Teague said. "Once we got in position our boat just came to us. We found the right set up, and Paul just drove the heck out of it."

Teague and Whittier will be driving the AMSOIL boat at Pacific Offshore Series event in Pittsburg, Calif. on September 7-9.

Rinker Wins on the Ohio
AMSOIL Powerboat racer claims first 2007 victory

Grand Prix Series Champion Terry Rinker came home with his first victory of the season. Rinker closed to within 91 points of the points lead after winning the 50-lap feature at the Gallatin County’s “Thunder On The River” just outside Cincinnati, Ohio on the Ohio River.

Terry Rinker“We made some important changes this morning and it really paid off for us today as we pushed hard from out of 6th starting position to win,” said Rinker. “We want to dedicate this victory to our friend Wyatt Nelson who was injured yesterday in a heat race and feel we finally have the momentum and confidence back that we need in order to push for our third straight championship at season’s end.”

Randy Rinker drove the second AMSOIL-sponsored boat well until he took out both turn-four buoys on the 22nd lap. He eventually finished 7th.

The 5th Round of the 2007 F1-ChampBoat Grand Prix Series will take place in Windsor, Colo. on Labor Day Weekend with the main featured event on Labor Day Monday as the series returns to the north central part of the state for the first time since 2005. Four drivers are within 91 points of each other, making 2007 something special with the champion probably not being decided until the final race in Savannah, Georgia in early November. Thanks to

Lovell’s Pick up Pace
Team AMSOIL takes on inaugural head-to-head rock racing

Brad and Roger Lovell have conquered most of world’s toughest rock formations at a snail’s pace, but now, the Utah-duo can say they don’t mind picking up the pace a little bit.

The inaugural head-to-head rock race went down in Salt Lake City and Lovell Racing was on hand with two trucks. Brad Lovell described the event as follows, “If rock crawling compares to fencing, XRRA is like boxing, and this is like a knife fight in Tijuana.”

Lovell Rock RacingNervousness and excitement abounded as teams ran time trials to determine start positions. Brad Lovell, with off-road veteran Mike Foster serving as co-driver, qualified in fourth place. This put them in the first heat of the first ever Rockcross. “My skin was crawling and I wanted nothing more than to have that green flag drop. Nobody knew how this was going to work out. We took off and all the excitement turned into sheer focus on beating the two trucks next to me. Luckily, we got the hole-shot and hit the rock first. From there we never looked back and got a ticket to the semi-finals.”

The next race pitted Team Lovell against Stumph and Schiesow. Despite starting in second, the Lovell truck was able to make a pass on the backstretch and grab the win.  Lovell was now in the finals.

In the main, the start was a dead heat, but as Brad explains it, things got dicey after that: “This guy was fast and we had a good race going. We would get right on him in the rock but there was no room to pass. We came out of the rock with me on two wheels looking to roll. I had to lift to get the inside tires down.  We came within inches of rolling off the next climb. We plunged over the rock and into the unlighted dust. I couldn’t see the hairpin turn and ended the race upside down with a face full of dust. I got to hand it to Jimmy Maybe for some extremely fast heads up racing.” Brad Lovell walked away with a second place finish.

After the FABTECH Ford Ranger gets extensive inspection and repair, Brad and Roger Lovell will again team up for the WE-Rock US Finals in Houston, Texas Sept. 15th and 16th.

Steve Laursen Tops Superior Speedway AMSOIL Feature

It was a return to the top for three time AMSOIL Series Champion Steve Laursen (1999-2000- 2003) as he led all thirty feature laps Friday night at the Superior Speedway. Laursen's first two outings of 2007 were extremely disappointing as he recorded a 25th place finish with a DNF at the first event at the Hibbing (MN) Raceway and a 23rd place finish in race number two at the ABC Raceway in Ashland, WI. Laursen came back with a vengeance on the track he called one of his favorites with a dominating sweep of the 30 car field.

After winning the first of four heats Laursen started the main event on the outside of the front row and shot out to the lead over the surprising Travis Budisalovich who started on the pole. The event had a brief hiccup on the first lap when Donnie Lofdahl apparently collected Mike Rich at the back of the field and Rich spun off into the infield. It was a complete restart and again Laursen beat Budisalovich to the punch and quickly extended his lead as Darrell Nelson, Harry Hanson and Pat Doar battled for third. Hanson won that skirmish with Doar fourth and Nelson fifth. Several cars that started deep in the field were headed forward including Rick Hanestad who cracked the top ten from row seven in the first five laps. By the one third mark the field had settled in and was strung out around the speedway. At this point Laursen had a comfortable lead over the smooth running Budisalovich while Hanson cruised alone in third. Lurking outside the top five was veteran campaigner Tom Nesbitt while up front, Laursen was sizing up the traffic in front of him. Doar was on the move and closed on Hanson for third and Nesbitt made a successful bid for fifth. The fast moving Hanestad arrived in sixth and with ten laps remaining the order stood at Laursen with the lead over Budisalovich, Doar, Hanson and Nesbitt in the top five while Hanestad, John Kaanta, Joel Cryderman, Eric Pember and Nelson made up the back half of the top ten. A lap later Doar got by Budisalovich for second and the caution flag made it's first appearance since the first lap incident when Caley Emerson was turned around in turn one.

The restart gave Laursen a clear track but also put the always dangerous Doar right on his bumper. At the green flag Doar jumped all over Laursen but Laursen was equal to the task. The two raced side by side for a couple of circuits but Laursen was too strong and was not to be deigned pulling away by a couple of car lengths. As Laursen settled into a rhythm, Nesbitt got by Budisalovich into third and Hanestad also went by into fourth dropping Budisalovich to fifth. Kaanta, Hanson, Cryderman, Pember and Kyle Peterlin ran six through tenth. The only change in the top ten at the checkered flag was Budisalovich losing another spot as Kaanta moved into the top five in the waning laps. Danny Young had the best run of those qualifying through the B feature as he ran from row eleven to an eleventh place finish. Laursen went on to take the convincing win and became the third winner in three 2007 events.

Another Strong Finish for Smith
Wisconsin-driver revs up to second at North/South 100

The AMSOIL/Brady Smith Racing team trekked south two weeks ago to compete in the 25th Annual 'North/South 100' at the Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky. With 86 of the best Dirt Late Model drivers in the country in attendance for the premier event, Brady Smith timed his AMSOIL late model 13th quickest in qualifying. The Solon Springs, Wis. native then won his heat race to earn the pole position for the $50,000 to win A-Main.

Smith ran up front throughout the 100-lap feature event and even led a couple of laps early. After falling back as far as fourth late in the race, Smith charged back by car builder Scott Bloomquist and Chub Frank to earn an impressive runner-up performance to winner Jimmy Owens.

“I was very pleased with the performance of our AMSOIL / Big Red Motorsports sponsored car at Florence over the weekend,” exclaimed Smith. “The car was strong all weekend, but we just didn’t quite have enough there at the end of the race to get by Owens for the win. It feels good to run up front in another Crown Jewel event and hopefully we can do that again at Batesville this coming weekend!”

Smith continued his dominate racing at the Batesville Speedway in Locust Grove, Arkansas last weekend for the 15th Annual 'Comp Cams Topless 100.'  He timed in 28th fastest of the 62 entrants in qualifying on Friday and later ran fifth in his competitive heat race.  However, the Solon Springs, Wisconsin native gained access into the $46,000 to win A-Main by virtue of his second place run in the consolation event on Saturday, August 18.
After starting from the outside of the eleventh row for the 100-lap feature event, Smith passed 16 cars en route to a strong sixth place performance in the unsanctioned event.

“It was a pretty good weekend for our AMSOIL team at Batesville,” commented Smith this week.  “We haven’t had much luck at that place in recent years, so I guess we should be happy with the sixth place finish.  I am really looking forward to Bulls Gap this week, as we ran extremely well there earlier in the year.  Hopefully, we will be a threat to bring home that $20,000 top prize.”

Douglas Wins, Oberg Moves Up in Standings
Super Team drivers battling in WSORR point’s race

The World Series of Off Road Racing returned for a special three-day race weekend in Bark River, Mich. last weekend and the AMSOIL Super Team was ready to rake in the hardware.

On Friday night, the WSORR held a make-up round for an event that was postponed in June. In the highly contested Pro 4x4 class, Scott Douglas powered his Ford F-150 to an early lead on the first lap. He was followed by Johnny Greaves and the top two drivers pushed each other for the entire race. Greaves was able to keep the lead position when the checkered flag fell, but Douglas came across in second.

On Saturday, Douglas wasted no time in getting back on the winning track. Douglas pulled the holeshot and led wire-to-wire and cruised home for the win, his second win in the WSORR this season and he is the only driver to beat Greaves in a WSORR race this year.

On Sunday, Douglas again pushed his F-150 out front and battled with the top drivers in the third position for much of the circuit. On lap nine, however, Douglas ran into problems after breaking a left front wheel. He was able to scrap together a fourth place finish and for the season, Douglas sits fourth overall and less than 25 points from the top spot.

In Pro 2wd action, AMSOIL driver Mike Oberg was looking for wins and a return to the top of the overall standings. On Friday night, the AMSOIL driver took over the lead on the second lap and ran out front for much of the race. He would have a battle on his hands as he would duel for the lead for the remaining five laps. A see-saw battle erupted and Oberg just missed bringing his AMSOIL/Kumho truck across the finish line first. His second gave him his fifth podium in the WSORR Pro 2wd class this year.

On Saturday, Oberg was looking for his sixth podium and he would have a fight on his hands trying to get there. Oberg had to push through traffic to find a top finishing spot, and was able to do so on lap six when he made it around Kevin Probst. Now riding in third, Oberg and the top two trucks ran uncontested for the final four laps.

Oberg had regained his points lead heading into Sunday and would need to keep Scott Taylor be close to retain it. Oberg was running well early in the race, but a truck stalled in front of him in the dusty conditions and kicked Oberg back. The Eagle River, Wis. ~ native made his way up to fourth by the time the checkered flag dropped. Taylor, however, had already taken the win and now leads Oberg by one point heading into Crandon.

Other AMSOIL drivers fared well at Bark River. Dan Baudoux had a great "rebound" weekend, winning on Saturday and Sunday and finishing fourth on Friday in the Super Stock Truck class. Dave Waldvogel also fared well in the Super Stock Truck class, finishing with three podiums, (third, second and third). Waldvogel now sits just eight points out of first place.

In the Pro Light Pickup class, Dan Vanden Heuvel, Jr. recorded his best finish of his young racing career with a third place on Sunday. Junior now sits eighth in points in the Pro Light Pickup class. His brother Mike Vanden Heuvel also ran well at Bark River, finishing third on Saturday and winning the 1600 Light Buggy race on Sunday.

The WSORR will be racing at the "Big House" on Labor Day weekend. Douglas, Oberg and Dan Vanden Heuvel, Sr. will be at Crandon, Wis. for rounds 10 and 11.
