Smith Gets Big Finish at ‘Colossal 100’
Late model driver shows well at Lowe’s Motor Speedway

Concord, N.C. ~ Brady Smith had never raced his Chevy Monte Carlo at the famed Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.  The Solon Springs, Wis. native took his improving season on the road to the NASCAR sanctioned track for a showdown with some of the best late model drivers in the heart of racing country.

Smith showed off an extremely fast car during Friday’s qualifying.  The Deuce ran the 37th fastest time out of the 119 entrants into the inaugural ‘Colossal 100’.  Starting up front for his heat race, Smith was involved in an incident with another driver and was sent to the back of the pack.  On the restart, he was able to pass a host of cars to salvage a fourth place finish.

With only the top two finishers in each of the 10 heat races gaining access to the ‘Colossal’, Smith was forced to run a B-main event.  In his 25-lap race, Smith was able to take the win, transferring him into the 21st starting spot for the 100-lap A-main.  In the feature, The Deuce was on the move early in the race.  Within the first 40 laps, he had worked his way into the top 10 and was moving his way up the leader board.  However, a flat on the 54th lap halted his momentum.  Smith’s bad fortune left him with an 18th place finish.

“Unfortunately, our strong run in the feature was halted by the flat tire,” said Smith.  “It could have easily been changed and we could have continued, but their rule of black flagging anyone who brings out a caution put an end to that idea.  We probably had a top five car in the feature, but weren’t able to continue after the flat tire.”

The AMSOIL/Brady Smith Racing team will make the long trek out east again this week, as the NARA Late Model Dirt Series will sanction an event on Saturday the Hagerstown Speedway in Hagerstown, Md.  A $10,000 top prize is on the line in the annual ‘Stanley Schetrompf Classic’
at Frank Plessinger’s 1/2-mile facility.  Smith comes into the event 12th in the latest version of the NARA Late Model Dirt Series point standings and second in the Rookie of the Year battle.

Dube Brings Win To Hometown Crowd
Dirt bike rider gets opening round victory

Victoriaville, Quebec ~ Marco Dube roared to an opening round win in front of his hometown crowd last weekend.  The event marked the first weekend of racing for the Canadian Arenacross Series.

Dube, on top of his AMSOIL backed KTM won both of his qualifying races (both the 250 and 450 classes) and had the confidence soaring heading into the finals.  Dube was able to win the 250 final, but had trouble on the senior circuit.  After starting in fourth, Dube moved into second after passing two riders in the same corner.  He was gaining on the leader, but ran into trouble with lapped traffic, crashing in one of the turns.  He remounted and crossed the finish line in fifth.  Dube will be racing next weekend, May 6, in the St. Apollinaire Challenge at the Quebec Loco track.

Supercross Heads West
Grant goes outdoors to win 4-stroke championships

Dallas, Texas ~ The AMA Supercross season has been toiling around the East Coast for roughly the past two months.  During that time, Team AMSOIL rider Josh Grant picked up a handful of wins in the Supercross Lites class, Billy Laninovich rode in the senior circuit, Kevin Windham returned from a broken arm and, of course, Mike LaRocco announced his retirement.  With the season winding down, Team AMSOIL is looking at a strong finish to salvage a sluggish season.

Windham had the biggest opportunity to continue his comeback from the bad break he suffered back in December.  The injury kept him out for the first two months of the season, and K-Dub has been searching for the speed that eludes all riders when they miss significant time.  Windham started the night strong, finishing behind James Stewart and Chad Reed in his heat race.  He then jumped into the final and couldn’t get comfortable against the rest of the field.  K-Dub was able to grab a top-10, finished seventh in the main.

In the Lites class, Laninovich was switching back to the smaller bike after spending time on the Honda CRF 450 while the series was on the East Coast.  Laninovich also had to get used to being the lone rider for Team AMSOIL in the Lites class after he and teammate Jake Wiemer were involved in an automobile accident on the Thursday before the Dallas race.  Wiemer suffered some serious injuries to his face and sat out last weekend’s race.

“Jake was driving,” said team manager J.C. Waterhouse.  “He’s received the worst of the injuries.  He has a fracture in his cheek and a fracture in his eye socket, which are the only things that require a timeframe to get back to normal.  It’s not a physical recovery that I think a motocrosser would typically have, but I think it would still be about 10 to 12 weeks.”

Laninovich was clearly off the pace all night long.  After failing to advance with a top nine finish in his heat race, Laninovich had to qualify by winning the Last Chance Qualifier.  In the main, he finished ninth and currently sits in sixth overall in the West Coast Supercross Series.  The AMA Supercross Series will be back in action this weekend in Seattle.

While the supercross season is winding down, many riders are getting ready for the outdoor motocross schedule.  Team AMSOIL riders Josh Grant and Tommy Hahn took part in the 19th Annual White Brothers World 4-Stroke Championships in San Bernardino, Calif. last weekend.  It’s the second year Grant took part in the event, and experience paid off for the second year pro.

Grant had a spectacular weekend, winning four of the four moto’s he raced in.  The California rider was able to sweep the overall wins in both pro classes.  What made the feat even more amazing was that Grant was riding on the bigger Honda CRF 450 instead of his CRF 250.  Teammate Hahn had a seventh overall in the 250F Pro class.

Walleyes Scarce For PWT Pro, Field
Team AMSOIL angler rebounds on day three

Merrill, Wis. ~ With the grass turning green and ice off the lakes in northern Wisconsin, it’s time to start thinking about fishing.  Team AMSOIL pro walleye angler Steve Butchart headed to the opening round of the Professional Walleye Trail in Merrill, Wis. last weekend.  It took two days for the entire field of more than 100 anglers to get a good read on the fish. A local Department of Natural Resources official said this was the worst “bite” he had seen in more than two decades, and was backed up by the low daily numbers by the field of pros that scattered about Lake Winnecomme.  Butchart took home daily weights of 1.03 lbs., 1.27 lbs. and 3.58 lbs. for a three-day total of 5.88 lbs.  That was enough to land the Hayward, Wis. resident in 70th.  The tour heads west to Chamberlin, S.D. in two weeks, then to Devils Lake, N.D. in late May.
