Smith Grabs First Win of 2006
Late Model racer makes triumphant return to WDRL

West Union, Iowa ~ Sometimes the changing of the calendar page can mean a world of difference.  On July 1, Team AMSOIL Late Model driver Brady Smith used the new month as a new beginning to his 2006 race season.  Smith took part in a World Dirt Racing League event, the same series he won in 2004, at the Echo Valley Speedway in West Union, Iowa.

After winning his heat race and finishing second in the pole dash, Smith earned an outside starting spot on the front row for the feature. From the start, he hounded race leader Chad Simpson before blowing by him in traffic on lap 14.  The “Deuce” drove his AMSOIL #2 Monte Carlo to near perfection throughout the rest of the 50-lap A-main, beating Simpson and WDRL points leader Brian Harris to the finish.  It marked Smith’s first victory of 2006.

Following his big win at Echo Valley, it was off to the Bureau County Speedway in Princeton, Ill. on Sunday for another AMSOIL sponsored WDRL event.  The Deuce again won his heat race and finished third in the pole dash, meaning he would roll off from the inside of the second row in the A-main.  In the 50-lap feature, Smith rode a steady race, finishing a solid fourth in the final rundown.

“It was a very good weekend for us and I am ecstatic to get back into victory lane,” said an excited Smith.  “Our car was fantastic at Echo Valley on Saturday night.  It rained some during the night, but the Echo Valley crew did a wonderful job getting the track re-packed and in great shape.  Then at Princeton on Sunday, our car was just too tight in the feature.  It was too tight before the track took rubber after the halfway point, so it was really tight after that.  But overall, it was great to get the win at Echo Valley and I have to thank AMSOIL, Big Red Motorsports and all of my great sponsors for all of their support!”

The Brady Smith Racing team is about ready to embark on an aggressive schedule of racing over the next week.  Smith will travel to Illinois and Iowa over the next several days to compete in five UMP Summernationals Series events.  The action will kick off on Friday July 7 at the Bureau County Speedway in Princeton, Ill.  Below is the upcoming tentative schedule for the “Deuce.”

Friday  July 7  Bureau County (IL) Speedway
Saturday July 8 Fairbury American Legion (IL) Speedway
Sunday July 9   Tri-City (IL) Speedway - $10,000 to win
Monday July 10 LaSalle (IL) Speedway
Wednesday  July 12 I-34 (IA) Raceway

Shryock Wins Again
Team AMSOIL driver destroys competition at “DIAMOND OF DIRT TRACKS” Nationals

Wheatland, Mo. ~ With the best of the best in Modified racing invading Wheatland, Mo., this past weekend, seven-time defending United States Modified Touring Series national champ Kelly Shryock set himself apart from the field with a steamroller of domination that solidly positioned himself as the best Modified pilot in America.

After a preliminary win on Saturday, Shryock captured Monday's Pole Dash to put himself on the point for Monday night's $5,000-to-win main event at the Inaugural “Diamond of Dirt Tracks” Nationals. Despite several cautions and 40 laps for the other 25 drivers to give Shryock a run for his money, the night belonged to the Fertile, Iowa veteran as he sailed to his 15th USMTS victory of the season.

The A-Main got off to a slow start, as three tries were needed to begin the race. On the initial start, a driver stopped on the track in turn two to bring out the first yellow of the race. The race needed two more attempts before the first lap was complete. When the green flag finally waved, Shryock jumped into the lead and never looked back, adding 40 more laps to his gigantic points lead in the AMSOIL Lap Leader award race.

The AMSOIL sponsored USMTS will take a nine-day break before returning to action on Wednesday, July 12, at the Dodge County Raceway in Kasson, Minn., for the first of eight races in 10 days.
